Wednesday Blog - an uninspired title, but still...

Hi All:

So here is this week's blog - which as it happens is about new designs as well as design theory.  What seems like a heavy handed subject - the theory of design - is actually just a few musings on how I design.

Some people sketch or draw their ideas and then go from there...as I cannot draw, not for lack of trying, and sketching for me looks like spastic stick figures, those "some" people do not include me.

Some people work from photographs or design books, taking inspiration from architecture or nature, etc...and then translating that inspiration to their designs.  I guess I do this sometimes...

But mostly my designs start from a pile of supplies.  Gemstones, crystal, metal, chain, etc in a jumble on my design table...my designs begin as a pile of color and texture and then evolves from there.  Perhaps begun with some antique brass chain from a vintage shop that I rescued from a very ugly necklace, and then a peruse through my large stones and pendants and other antique jewelry bits to find a focal point for the design which is forming in my mind.

From there, depending on the colors I am working with, I look for textures and colors to complement or match what I already have...then I begin my version of "draping"...basically a borrowed technique from my early days thinking I wanted to be a fashion designer.  Those days were very short lived as I realized that I hated to sew...passionately hated it, and I sucked at it too, so that was handy.  haha.

We all have our strengths, but sewing a straight seam is not one of mine.

So back to "draping" - I drape the jewelry piece with the raw materials the way I see it in my mind and then tweak as necessary for length and wearability.

All this without a single measurement or drawing....and while it seems like a very schitzophrenic way of designing jewelry, it has always worked for me.  It does keep me up some nights, when the compulsion along with an idea suddenly jumps into my head, at 3am while I am trying to catch a few winks.

But the point of this blog is really about both the theory and the practice.  I rambled about the theory and now here are pictures of the practice.  Some shots of some of the finished pieces I have made the past week or so.  Just a peek, until they are unveiled to the public at my show this weekend.

Happy Spring everyone - we're into March and the snow is slooooowly melting off my front yard.  Hopefully that means that 70 degree temps are not far behind.

Toodles,
Leah :-)

Ack! I missed last week's blog....sorry!

Hi All:

I just realized that I missed last week's blog....crap, and only like 3 weeks into my new Resolution.  Can I get a pass for having 2 blog posts last week?  Pretty please?

Anyway...the past week or so has been all about my new Vintage Romance Collection - antique and vintage jewelry repurposed with new crystal and gemstone accents highlighting gorgeous antique chandelier crystals.  Will have some sneak peek pics at the end of this post so you can see what I mean.  Gorgeous one of a kind pieces for modern brides - something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue.

As a bride, I remember how hard it was to fill that bill - and so this collection addresses at least 2 if not 3 of those for goodluck on a wedding day.

Let's see what else?  Um, the photographeress of lusciousness, Rachel, came over last Friday to catch me up on all my new designs and am working on Etsy each morning to add the new listings.  After the photos had all been clicked and stored - Rachel, Gold-Spangled Angie and I went into the Old Market in the snow...which was weird, I try to avoid driving while it's actively snowing.  Went antique jewelry shopping and found SO much cool stuff.  Amazing.  Carved ivory flower beads from the 1920's...I do not agree with killing elephants for their tusks... these are antiques and I feel that using them provides beauty and pays honor to those animals that died so long ago.

My most amazing find of the day - pale yellow faceted crystal oval bead necklace from the 1930's - this color is VERY rare and all the graduated beads were in pristine shape, except for a small flaw on one of the larger beads.  Gorgeous.

So here are some pics of the pieces I have completed so far.  Brides, look for them on Etsy - Vintage Romance Bridal - more designs added every day and custom orders are welcome.

Orange Blossom Necklace - $95

Daisy Haircombs - $35

Hydrangea Necklace - $86

Cabbage Roses Necklace - $57

Gladiolas Necklace - $57

Hope you enjoy!

Snow days mean more WORK and less shopping...

Hi All -

See, I am making a concerted effort to keep my New Year's promise to update more.  I have been at Mother Nature's mercy and she seems to be having some sort of fit of pre-menstral rage which has been spitting snow, ice and sleet all over Omaha the last week or so.  Just when I could finally see my lawn...she came along and covered it up again with a foot of snow.

I have shows coming up and daily checks of the 10-day weather report to see if I will be setting up in a blizzard or not.  This weekend is the first show and encompasses all of my V-Day plans.  With a husband currently deployed, Valentine's Day is not as romantic as it should be...so I am contributing to others displays of affection in the form of jewelry.

Have been working on new bridal designs which combine antique chandelier crystals and glass (old), elements such as freshwater pearls, gemstones and precious metals (new), and all tones of blues - something sentimental and nostaglic for brides this Spring and Summer.  It's a way for Reyna Red to wish brides well on their happy day and to be an integral part of the day.

Here are some pics of my messy petite worktable which is currently residing in the living room since my basement studio is way way way too cold right now...as well as one of the new bridal designs.

Enjoy!

And look pretty pictures!

What can I say?  I like sparkly things - swing them in front of me and I will focus on them....but that's going off onto another tangent.

Spring/Summer plans for Reyna Red

Hi all -

Well, I haven't been as diligent with updating this blog as I should be and as a "New Year's Resolution", I will attempt to remedy that. And so I propose the "Weekly Update" - that way I commit to posting at least 1 day a week, hopefully more, but we'll start with that.

So here is what's been happening since the last time I posted. Christmas came and went; spent the holiday in California with my family, boy it was nice to get away from feet of snow and shoveling and revel in the 60F temps for the week. DH met me there, which was a welcome surprise as he is serving our country in the AF, and holidays are not always possible.

New Years' was me and my two fuzzy mascots: Munchkin and Piglet, watching movies and snuggling under a quilt with a roaring fire. One thing about the Midwest that has been hard for this born and raised California girl to get used to is wind chill. Don't like it...going to go out on a limb and say it really sucks.

Um, so now we are at the beginning of Tax season, for which I will reveal the geek in me when I say I LOVE it. I eagerly await January 31st, when I can march into H&R Block and plunk my paperwork down and then 14 days later Uncle Sam sends me a lovely little chunk of change. It's glorious really.

Which brings us to Valentine's Day - for which DH and I are separated again. It's all good - have been concentrating on Reyna's Bridal line - LOTS of new things to look through on my Etsy page - and a lovely Spring Discount Deal as well. http://www.winddancerdesigns.etsy.com

New house, new studio, new angst, same old Red...

Hi All:

Ok, so I'm moved into my new house and my new studio....which is yay. Here are some pics of the new place:

Spent a month between Sept. and Oct. doing nonstop shows and now am in the midst of a month-long break. Well, not really a break persay...as I am working frantically on my websites, taking pics of new things, working on new designs and items for Christmas.

I have yet another Fall show this coming weekend - which is also Halloween, and hubby and I spent the better part of yesterday carving truly ambitious pumpkins - of which are pictured below.

Prepping for what looks to be a particularly harsh winter this year, another month of nonstop shows awaits me along with shoveling our massive driveway and corner lot by myself....yikes. Hello, snowblower. I am going to reward all my hard work with a visit home for the Christmas holiday to California.

Let's see, here is a preview of new designs:

Cleopatra Necklace

Amber Crystal Bangle

Harlequin Cloisonne Necklace

Ok, that's all for now folks - gotta get back to it.

I swear I haven't dropped off the face of the Earth!

Hi All:

You few, completely awesome people... that read my random thoughts, musings and rants. I know I have neglected you all shamelessly - and should be flogged for it. But, I swear I have missed you terribly and will endeavor to keep more up to date on this.

I haven't been idle in my silence - here is a quick recap of the last couple months:

I moved.
I am still unpacking.
I finally finished my degree.
I am frantically working on new designs and collections for Fall/Winter and have a sampling for you:

As always - any and all feedback is welcome and appreciated.

Toodles,
Leah :-)
